A vast Osmanian-style hospital block on the Musi riverfront, designed by Vincent Esch. Repeated demolition proposals after flood damage have been resisted by conservationists.

History & Story

Vincent Esch's most ambitious project was a vast Indo-Saracenic hospital complex running along the Musi riverfront, part of the comprehensive city rebuilding programme after the 1908 flood that killed 15,000 people. Its long arcaded wards, domed towers, and brick facades set the Osmanian civic style at its grandest scale. Despite years of flood damage and multiple demolition proposals from successive state governments, conservationists have successfully argued for its retention as one of the finest hospital buildings in Asia.
