Spanish Mosque
Also known as: Masjid-e-Ibrahimiya
Commissioned by the Paigah noble Iqbal-ud-Daula after travels in Spain. Octagonal spires and Moorish arches modelled on Cordoba, the only mosque of this style in India.
History & Story
The Paigah noble Iqbal-ud-Daula returned from travels in Andalusia captivated by the Mezquita of Córdoba and commissioned a mosque in its Moorish spirit: octagonal minarets, horseshoe arches, and decorative tilework that have no precedent in Hyderabad's Islamic tradition. The result is the only mosque in India built in the Spanish-Moorish style, an emblem of the Hyderabadi aristocracy's cosmopolitan reach in the final decades before accession. Local craftsmen interpreted the Andalusian vocabulary through Deccani materials.
