History & Story

Purani Haveli, the Old Mansion, was the private residence of Mahbub Ali Khan, the sixth and most flamboyant Nizam, who reportedly never wore the same outfit twice and employed a staff specifically to catalogue his clothing. His 240-foot walk-in wooden wardrobe, one of the longest private closets in recorded history, survives inside the building. The estate was established by the second Nizam, Nizam Ali Khan, after moving the capital back to Hyderabad from Aurangabad, and has been at the centre of Asaf Jahi court life ever since.
