King Koti

Where the seventh and last Nizam, Osman Ali Khan, lived for most of his life and died in 1967. The monogram 'KK' of the original owner gave the area its name. Parts now a government hospital.

History & Story

Mir Osman Ali Khan, considered the world's wealthiest man by Time magazine in 1937, lived at King Kothi with legendary frugality: a cracked teacup, one worn dressing gown, meals from a modest kitchen. He signed the instrument of accession here in 1948 after Operation Polo ended Hyderabad's independence. He died in this palace in 1967, aged 81, after decades as a private citizen of India. The monogram 'KK' above the original gates belonged to the mansion's earlier owner; the area took the name.
