The one-man art collection of Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, Salar Jung III, a former prime minister to the Nizam, from the Veiled Rebecca to Mughal jade and a musical clock. The family's Diwan Deodi stood on the riverfront nearby.

History & Story

Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, Salar Jung III, was a Prime Minister of Hyderabad who spent 35 years and much of his personal fortune acquiring art from every culture and era: Raphael paintings, Mughal jade daggers, Japanese netsuke, a full-size Italian marble Veiled Rebecca, and a 19th-century English musical clock whose automated huntsman emerges to strike the hour. The collection filled his family mansion on the Musi; after accession it was declared a national institution and moved to the present purpose-built building, one of the world's largest single-person collections.
