Osman Sagar (Gandipet Lake)
Also known as: Gandipet Lake, Osmansagar
A major reservoir on the Musi built after the 1908 flood to supply Hyderabad with clean water. Named for Nizam VII; its construction displaced several villages.
History & Story
The catastrophic 1908 Musi flood, which killed 15,000 people and destroyed entire neighbourhoods, made it impossible to continue taking water from the river. The City Improvement Board commissioned two large reservoirs to supply the city and regulate future flooding. Osman Sagar, named for the seventh Nizam, was built by damming the Musi at Gandipet, displacing several villages in the process. Its construction represented both a triumph of engineering and a transformation of the river's upper valley.
