Raymond's Tomb
Also known as: Michel Raymond Tomb, Mussa Ram Tomb
A plain Grecian obelisk over the grave of Michel Joachim Marie Raymond, a French general in the second Nizam's service so respected that locals held an annual urs at his tomb.
History & Story
Michel Joachim Marie Raymond, Moossa Ram to his Hyderabadi soldiers, was a French soldier who rose to command the Nizam's most effective artillery corps, a force of 14,000 men that fought with extraordinary effectiveness across the Deccan. He was so beloved that his Hyderabadi soldiers held an annual urs (shrine festival) at his tomb for generations after his death, a Hindu-Muslim devotional practice honouring a Christian Frenchman. The plain Doric obelisk, modest by the standards of Hyderabad's other monuments, is all that marks one of the city's most remarkable stories.
