Khairtabad Mosque
Also known as: Khairatabad Mosque & Stepwell, Khairunnisa Begum Mosque, Khairatabad Masjid
A 17th-century Qutb Shahi domed mosque and historic stepped reservoir built in 1626 CE by Princess Khairunnisa Begum for her royal tutor and scholar Akhund Mulla Abdul Malik.
History & Story
Built in 1626 CE during the reign of Sultan Muhammad Qutb Shah (the sixth ruler of Golconda), this exquisite mosque was commissioned by Princess Khairunnisa Begum, the daughter of Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. The princess constructed the mosque along with an adjoining palatial retreat, large orchards, and a stepped water reservoir (baoli) for her revered tutor, the distinguished Persian scholar Akhund Mulla Abdul Malik.
The mosque's architecture is a quintessential masterpiece of Qutb Shahi style: a three-arched facade with rich stuccowork, delicate lotus-bud cresting, slender decorative minarets with ornamental jali panels, and a projecting domed prayer hall. In the adjacent courtyard stands a magnificent domed tomb designed for Mulla Abdul Malik, though the scholar passed away during a pilgrimage to Mecca and was buried in the holy city, leaving the tomb cenotaph unoccupied. The surrounding suburban locality grew around this royal endowment and came to be forever known as "Khairatabad".
