Capital of the Qutb Shahi kingdom before Hyderabad was founded. A granite hill fort famous for its acoustic system, the Fateh Rahben gun, and the diamond trade that passed through its markets.

History & Story

Originally a mud fort of the Kakatiya dynasty, Golconda was rebuilt across the 16th century into a granite hill fortress, a self-sufficient city housing 50,000 people with palaces, mosques, halls, and reservoirs inside its walls. Its acoustic engineering is extraordinary: a handclap at the Fateh Darwaza entrance gate produces an echo audible at the Bala Hisar summit one kilometre away, deliberately designed for royal communication and defence. The Koh-i-Noor, the Hope Diamond, and the Regent Diamond all passed through Golconda's markets before their dispersal to Europe.
