Qutb Shahi Tombs
Also known as: Ibrahim Bagh Tombs
A walled necropolis of seven Qutb Shahi sultans and their families, set in gardens below Golconda. Under a long conservation programme by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture.
History & Story
Seven sultans, their queens, and grandchildren lie here in a garden necropolis that accumulated over 130 years. Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah's tomb, built 50 years before his death, was the largest tomb ever attempted in the Deccan when constructed. The complex also holds the tomb of Premamati, his Hindu courtesan whom he celebrated in verse as a musician and lover. By 2010 the complex had deteriorated badly, with trees growing through walls and stonework crumbling; a 20-year restoration by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture began in 2013 and continues today.
