Hayat Nagar

Built by Hayat Bakshi Begum, daughter, wife and mother of Qutb Shahi sultans, on the old Machilipatnam road. A serai and step-well stood alongside for travellers.

History & Story

Hayat Bakshi Begum was arguably the most powerful woman in Qutb Shahi history, simultaneously daughter, wife, and mother of sultans, and regent for periods in between. She built this mosque on the Machilipatnam road as one of her last acts of architectural patronage, the year before the dynasty fell to Aurangzeb's siege. A serai (rest-house) and step-well for road travellers once stood alongside, making the site a full service complex on the old coastal trade route.
