Dabirpura Darwaza
Also known as: Dabirpura Gate
One of the few surviving gateways of the arc of city walls the Qutb Shahis and Asaf Jahis threw around Hyderabad; most of the rest were pulled down in the twentieth century.
History & Story
Hyderabad was once a walled city entered through thirteen ceremonial gateways (Darwazas), each with its own architectural identity and military function. Of these, Dabirpura Darwaza is among the few that survive, the others were demolished in the 20th century for road widening. Standing in what was the old southern quarter, the gateway gives some sense of what the walled character of Hyderabad once looked like: a city entered through massive arched portals, not at-grade road crossings.
