The stone road bridge over the Musi built under Afzal-ud-Daula, the fifth Nizam, that opened up the northern bank for the civic quarter of the twentieth century.

History & Story

Built under the fifth Nizam Afzal-ud-Daulah, this stone bridge over the Musi opened the northern bank for the Afzal Gunj suburb, gardens, market, and residential quarter, that took the bridge's name. A massive ceremonial gateway, Afzal Darwaza, stood at the southern approach until it was demolished in 1954 for road widening. The bridge's construction was a turning point: for the first time, the city began to expand significantly north of the Musi.
