Ravindra Bharathi Cultural Complex
Also known as: Ravindra Bharathi Auditorium, Tagore Centenary Memorial Hyderabad
Built to commemorate the birth centenary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, Ravindra Bharathi is Hyderabad's premier performing arts auditorium and cultural heart, hosting classical dance, theatre, music, and poetry for over six decades.
History & Story
Inaugurated on May 11, 1961 by Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Ravindra Bharathi was commissioned by the Government of Andhra Pradesh as part of the nationwide Rabindranath Tagore Birth Centenary celebrations. Designed by renowned chief architect Mohammed Fayazuddin, the building seamlessly merges post-independence modernist civic architecture with Deccan structural elements.
The auditorium has an acoustically calibrated 1,100-seat main hall, an art gallery, an open-air amphitheatre, and rehearsal spaces. For over six decades, it has served as the spiritual sanctuary of Kuchipudi dance, Carnatic and Hindustani classical concerts, Telugu theatre festivals, Urdu Mushairas, and international cultural exchange. It stands adjacent to the Telangana State Assembly and Secretariat as a permanent beacon of Deccan arts.
