HITEC City & Cyber Towers
Also known as: Cyber Towers, HITEC City, Cyberabad, L&T Infocity, Madhapur Tech Hub
Inaugurated in 1998, the iconic 10-storey octagonal Cyber Towers building and fountain plaza transformed Hyderabad into a global technology capital.
History & Story
In the mid-1990s, Hyderabad set out to build a modern economy for the new century. The state government partnered with Larsen and Toubro to build HITEC City across 151 acres in Madhapur.
The centerpiece was Cyber Towers, an octagonal ten-storey tower with a central atrium, blue-tinted glass walls, and a large fountain roundabout. It offered reliable high-speed satellite connectivity, international telecom links, and continuous backup power, giving tech companies modern workspaces that were rare in India at the time.
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee opened the building in November 1998 with companies like Oracle and GE moving in. Soon after, Microsoft chose Hyderabad for its first software development centre outside the United States. In March 2000, U.S. President Bill Clinton visited Cyber Towers and praised the city's growing tech talent. The project sparked rapid growth across Madhapur, Gachibowli, and Kondapur, turning the area into Cyberabad and putting Hyderabad firmly on the global map.
